My city has finally decided to repave our street after more then 50 years. The surveyors and engineers have marked it all up with various notations. I can read most of the underground utility marks but some others are in odd places and I'm not sure what they mean. I'd like to find a listing of the standard markings used by engineering surveyors .

  1. The answer is that there are not always standard markings.

Some are universal.. and generally these are easily understood.

Some are unique to a crew or company.. point numbers set for individual measurements (a dot of paint with a number next to it is tyical).

Some are not even surveyor's marks.  A nationwide service called USA (underground service alert) comes out before any major excavation and performs or coordinates the marking of all underground utilities and services..surveyors have nothing to do with that.

Others are directions by the City to the contractor regarding elements of the project (grinding limits, curb cuts, etc..) and the contractor himself may come out and identify and mark various elements that he wants to pay special attention to.

If you have a specific mark you are wondering about, drop me a line and I will try to tell you what it is.

(contrats. on getting your street paved.  Some Cities have a 100 year cycle..not 50! )
