Try the Grand Hotel in Tynemouth.  In a great spot overlooking a beautiful coastline.  Several pubs and good restaurants (Sidneys in particular) within two minutes walk and only twenty mins into Newcastle.  Also a good access point if you want to head up the coast into Northumberland to visit Lindisfarne or one of the many castles.  enjoy :-)

There's Loads.....

Walworth Castle, near Darlington is really nice and not too pricey,

Also the Jersey Farm near Barnard Castle is really trendy and does a fantastic Carvery!

Lumley Castle is very good. it is on the outskirts of Chester-le- Street

Try Malmaison in Newcastle. I've not stayed at that particular one, but at others in the Malmaison group, and found them very comfortable, relaxing, chic and good value for money, especially off-peak.
