  1. Try this one: http://jisho.org/

  2. Here is a link to what I believe to be one of the finest Japanese-English dictionaries on the internet:

    http://jisho.org/

    A couple of tips

    1) DO NOT WRITE IN CAPITALS. Capitals will only bring up results in katakana.

    2) Pay attention to long vowels. We may write the name ‘Tokyo’ with short o’s, but the Japanese pronounce them long, so when entering it in this dictionary it needs to be spelt ‘toukyou’ or it will not come up. Check out these links for more information on modified Hepburn romanisation:

    http://yosida.com/en/hiragana.html

    3) If you cannot remember the whole word, just enter what you can remember and trawl through the results. For example, entering ‘kaze’ will call up all words beginning ‘kaze’, such as the inimitable ‘kaze no fukimawashi’ (roughly translated: ‘the curious direction that events have taken’).

The dictionary also has a number of other invaluable functions like being able to search by kanji, sentences containing the word you were looking for, details about irregular kanji usage or obsolete words etc.

If you can find a better dictionary than this, I’d like to know about it!

  4. I always use this one, but I do not know, if it is better than the others. It is from the Japanese Yahoo.

    プログレッシブ和英中辞典

  5. Try the Jim Breen's WWWJDIC at
