Question:

Where can I find complete and updated Official Rules?

I am getting sick and tired of having to put up with the bad rules. Whenever someone makes a bad call, I usually lets it go because I don't wanna get into arguing and waste playing time. But it's one guy w/ wrong info affecting another and now we all play with bad rules. Last time we played, I was wrongly accused of making illegal play twice. One multiple contact when digging and once called for lift after block when I hit it up cleanly with one fist. Now, I intend to provide them with corresponding correct rules whenever someone makes a bad call. So I would like to find detailed official rules hand book or something that can be viewed online. Thanks.

  1. Dan has a great answer with all of the different rule sets available online.

I will just point out that all rule sets will allow for the multiple contact on the first ball over the net.  That should not have been called if it was called a double hit.  It can still be called a lift.

The rule book will not help you on the lift after the block.  It was the judgement of the referee that you are questioning.  Not the rule.  The referee saw the ball stick on your fist.  (I am not saying that it did.  I am just telling you what the referee saw or thought they saw.)

Every referee, player and coach (and even parent) should know the current rules.  I spend a lot of time teaching rules.  I was at a USAV tournament the other day.  I saw the Libero serve.  I went over to the referee during the time out and told her that the Libero does not serve in USAV.  She called both captains over since the Libero for the other team had served as well.

I am the tournament director for a club here in Houston.  We run a refereeing and scorekeeping clinic here in December for certification and a general rules clinic for parents in December as well.

If you have any specific rules questions, please feel free to email me.

    Good luck.
