Question:

Where can I find dried coconut for snaking, not for baking?

A year ago, my friend brought a bag of "Dried Young Coconut" chunks from a Trader Joe's and it was some of the best dried fruit I've ever had, great for a trail mix or just to eat on its own. I've been searching ever since for a snack-able dried coconut - all I can find is the flaked coconut in the baking aisle of the grocery store (which is not only awkward to eat, but also sweetened. ew!). Anyone know where I could buy or order online?

  1. try TRADER JOES-ONLINE...?

  2. Well, since as you've noticed, most coconut that you don't get in the produce section is made for bakers, you're going to have a hard time finding unsweetened coconut unless you have access to a decent gourmet or import store in your area.

That being said, dried coconut is ridiculously easy to make, so if you don't mind a little extra work, pick up some coconuts from the store, crack 'em open, and use the wide-slot side of a standing cheese grater to shave chunks off of it.  Arrange them on a baking sheet and bake them for 20-30 minutes in a 250 degree oven.  Keep an eye on them in case they need more time;  depending on how thin you shave them, coconut is finicky to bake.

Or, if you'd rather just buy it, I found this website that appears to have what you want.  Happy munching!

  3. The dry goods section of most grocery stores will have unsweetened coconut.  I've purchased it many times at Whole Foods.
