If you don't want to sugar-coat her work, you could look at some of her critics, including millions of parents in Africa who lost children and loved ones to malaria, typhus and other insect-borne diseases that DDT could have prevented. Not to mention the billions of dollars spent with other, less effective eradication methods and the cost of crop damage and diseases. Her work was based on flawed science that was even questioned at the time, but nevertheless adopted.

The EPA banned DDT despite it's own finding that "DDT is not a carcinogenic hazard to man...DDT is not a mutagenic or teratogenic hazard to man...The use of DDT under the regulations involved here [does] not have a deleterious effect on freshwater fish, estuarine organisms, wild birds or other wildlife." It's still banned in many places and rarely used, which is really a shame. Fortunately the World Health Organization overturned the ban in 2006 and now encourages it's use in homes in Africa to control malaria.
