  1. Depending upon your state there are around 50 different plans available. Unless you have several days to do nothing but compare the plans you should visit a local independent agent that works with all the major plans. A good agent can give you an estimated cost of your co-pays for many different plans; can tell you if and when you go into the donut hole and how much your medication will cost; can tell you when and if you come out of the donut hole and how much the medications will be at that time. The premium and whether or not a plan has a deductible is not indicative of how much your total costs will be with any particular plan. You also need to check the formulary with each plan because although a plan states that generic drugs are a $5 co-pay that doesn't mean your generics are covered. Many plans will have "non-preferred" generics at a Tier 3 level so you'll be paying $60 to $80 per month.

Some people think that they'll be OK with just Medicare but after you pay the deductibles and co-insurance original Medicare only pays an average of 57% of a seniors medical charges. You do need some sort of supplemental insurance, be it a Medicare Supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan. In addition to the HMO and PPO there are also PFFS and MSA plans available that may suit you better.

One note: in many cases if you were eligible for Part D on January 1 and did not sign up you are locked out of getting a plan until next January so you need to make sure you are able to get on a plan. Exceptions to this rule is you have a 7 month window around your 65th birthday or you are just coming off of employer sponsored health coverage.
