Question:

Where can I find information on pumping exclusively?

I'm a new mom and I just started pumping semi-exclusively for my 6 week old. I pump 3-4 times during the day and nurse for the 2-3 night feedings. I get about 2-3 ounces out of each breast from each pumping session and the baby eats about 2-3 ounces at every feeding. Is that a normal amount of milk to get out of each breast? How much milk should I be feeding her in each bottle? She'll empty the bottle no matter how much I put in it. Does anyone know of any good informational website for people that are pumping exclusively?

  1. I am an exclusive pumper *Almost 7 months now* and I work full time. My son just started stage 1 foods and I never feed him formula. For starting out 2-3 oz per session is great! At that age my son was taking about 3-4oz. When I first started I loved www.kellysmom.com

If you need so more info message me I will gladly help you!

  2. 2-3 ounces from each breast is great.  2 websites that I really like are www.babycenter.com  They have a message board on moms that pump.  I also like www.kellymom.com.  They both have great information on them.

  3. i agree with previous poster. definitely check out kellymom.com, both their articles and message boards.

www.askdrsears.com also has great BFing/pumping info.

2-3 oz per breast per pumping sounds pretty good. that's what i got, but i also nursed way more than i pumped and never pumped until 3 mos. i don't know if you can maintain a supply for the long term when you are only getting that much. maybe you can, so don't get discouraged! i am just saying you are smart to look in to it.

also, your local La Leche League can be a great resource for you.

  4. 2-3 is quite norm for a mum who mostly pumps....the problem with pumping is if you start before your baby has well established feeding then your milk can go back as the pump wont stimulate the milk the way your baby does as they are 2 different actions..if you want to make more milk i would sugguest putting baby on your breast a little more and dont offer a dummy.or pump every 2-3 hours.are you finding he is starting to prefer the bottle?do you feel like your milk isnt as much as it was?if so try that and warm baths or showers help stimulate let down and try having him beside you while you pump as well.

  5. I've been pumping exclusively for my daughter eversince she was born because she never took to my breast.I typically get about 3-4oz from each breast.

However, now that I'm back at work I'm finding that I'm way too busy to pump as often (plus it's a major hassle at work) and my supply is only netting me about 2-3oz per breast.

www.kellymom.com is a great site for breast feeding moms.
