Try the book "Bury Me Standing" by Isabel Fonseca.  It was written a few years ago, but the information is wonderful and it is meticulously researched, suitable for use in a college level paper.  Also, find out if your local university has a department of Eastern European studies.  They will have access to scholarly periodicals on every subject, including on the Rroma and you could most likely contact the authors of those articles for detailed questions.
