I'm trying to put together a local haunted house in the Pasco-Hernando County area of Florida and need to know where to find all the rules and regulations for building and running one (IE how big do the walkways have to be? what kind of building material is allowed?)

  1. if you don't know where to look, (don't forget legal liability issues and insurance!) then maybe you should be thinking about next year rather then this year.

either way, you are going to need to hire a local attorney to represent you, so I say do that, and then ask him or her these kinds of questions.

  2. Alright first things first, you should check your cities website for noise and curfew restrictions. ((If you are using minors as actors in your haunt?)) But you would need to know the noise restrictions anyway ((EG. No noise after 10 like it is in my neighborhood))  After that you should probably have a sit down with your local fire marshall she/he would specify codes you would need to follow before you can open. But the main ones are, emergency sprinklers, no open flames, the walls are flame retardant and there are emergency exits.  Another smart thing to do would be to get liability insurance for your haunt. BUT if its just a haunted house you are doing in your front yard then it is most likely that your home owners insurance will cover it. They tend to treat them as if they were parties AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT CHARGE TO GET IN!!!! But if you are charging admission and you are NOT on your property  i would most definitely suggest getting insurance or security cameras. Also make sure that your actors have a NO TOUCHING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES RULE!!!!! I'm assuming because you are asking all these questions this is your first time running a commercial haunt? If so,  suggest asking all your questions and that on  HAUNTWORLD.COM forums we are all professional haunters or home haunters and we discuss such things there. But if you are doing all this in your front lawn or your home and you are NOT charging to get in then you dont have to worry about any of the above.
