Where can I find out free information on a person's death?

When I was in middle school a very close friend of mine passed away and no adult at the time would tell us how or why. Where can I access the cause of death for free??

  1. Hi, I'm sorry about your friend...  I'm sure the adults had a reason to keep this information from you and your friends at the time, but I can imagine it continues to be an unsolved mystery to many of you.

    Have you tried doing searches for your friend's name on Google, Yahoo!, etc.?  If it is a common name, insert a year as well (even an approximate year would help).

    Are you in touch with the friend's surviving relatives at all?  They are really the only people who can get a copy of your friend's death certificate from the county or state, which would contain the cause of death.

    If it was an unusual circumstance which caused the death, surely the local library where you and the friend lived would be able to help you search for at least an obituary, or perhaps even a newspaper article surrounding the death.
