In North America, there are ophthalmologists and optometrists.  The first are physicians and do surgery.  The second do not do surgery.  To become an ophthalmologist, you need to do a BSc, then get an MD, then do a residency.  There are many medical schools in Canada and the US.

To become an optometrist, you need to do a BSc, then go to an optometry school.  There are about 2 dozen optometry schools in North America.
