Question:

Where can I find summer job/volunteer opportunities for a teen?

I've just gotten out of school and I'm trying to find something to do! I would prefer a volunteer activity that I can do on a daily basis, but a summer job would be nice, too. I'm 16 and live in the California Bay Area.

Where do I look? What will look good on my college application?

Please help! If you know anything specifically about my area that would be great, but any general advice would also be appreciated.

  1. vuolunteer at a local boys and girls club or at a church.. as far as a summer job, tyr a clothing store or if you can handle it try cashier at a fast food restaurant..

  2. There’s lots of places in your community that you can volunteer.  From experience, I can tell you that any volunteer work you do will look good on your college application as well as future job applications.  One suggestion would be to volunteer for a local program or start your own tutoring service, especially tutoring in the subject of English.  There’s a great article on how to make money teaching and/or tutoring English as a Second Language here:  http://teenmoneymakingideas.com/how-engl...  I think this would be a great opportunity not only to make some extra cash but to also gain invaluable experience for your college applications.  Hope that helps!

  3. You can volunteer at:

    Hospital

    Local Library

    Nursing Homes

    Rehabilitation Centers for the Disabled

    Parks & Recreation

    Privately owned gardening centers

    Day Care Centers

Mow a lawn for an elderly neighbor

Also, do not overlook your local animal shelters. They always need someone to play with and walk the animals.

    Homeless shelters

    Food Banks

    Soup Kitchens

    Botanical Gardens

    Aquariums

  4. Most animal shelters need people to care for the animals. Petting and playing with them is good because it makes them more adoptable.

Call the local Habitat or Red Cross chapter and ask if they need any word-processing done.

Can you drive? Well?  Many senior citizen groups need transport for the folks who aren't driving any more, but need to get to doctors, grocery stores, hairdressers, and centers. For that matter, if you can run a bingo game or play old songs (piano or CDs) in a retirement or nursing home, that would be great.

You could offer to read stories or help little kids read at the library. For some poor kids, that's the safest, coolest place in the summer.

Anything you can discuss in an interview or write about in an essay will look good on the application. Don't do it just for a line--admissions people pick up on that and feel those students are frauds.
