I'm looking for something that covers the rules and rates at which capital gains from securities are taxed. This would include short and long term rates, along with a guide to how they apply to individual states as well. Thank you for your help.

  1. By far, the best source is IRS Publication 550 (link attached below).  Unfortunately, this only applies at the federal level.  Each state enacts their own tax laws, so you'll have to go to each state's tax page for more information.  Enjoy!

  2. Long term capital gains and qualified dividends are taxed at a max of 15%, could be lower if you have low income.  Short term capital gains (held one year or less) and interest from savings accounts are taxed at ordinary income rates, which vary by taxable income (up to 35%).

No one could give you a summary of the tax consequences of each state in this forum - each one is different.

As always, consult with a tax professional for specific answers.  CPA Greg

  3. All irs info is on their website. For the states you must go to their individual sites.
