Where can I find the best family health insurance coverage for the right price?

I am working for a small landscaping company that does not offer insurance. I am married with two kids, both under 2 yrs of age, and my wife has a pre-existing condition of asthma. Can someone help me find a good insurance coverage for a reasonable price and also accepts pre-existing conditions? Any idea on an average cost?

  1. I don't know what state you live in, and that makes a huge difference on insurance. Costco offers insurance to small business that's very affordable and is great coverage with no pre-existing stipulation. It's available in Ca., Wa., Hi, Or, and one other state. Go to www. costco.com and look under services. Otherwise you can go through www.einsurance.com and look for a quote.

  6. Shakers,

You're in a tough spot, I'm afraid, as there aren't many low cost options in the US.

There's a very good article at eHow that discusses how to get health insurance for you and your family when you don't have a job that covers you:

Take a look at it, as it covers all the major possibilities for getting insurance, and gives some great resources you can use.

If money is a big issue (and when isn't it?), you can also look here for tips on earning some extra cash online:

  7. There is no 'average.'  I just sold a family of 5 a 'cadilac' plan this morning for $295/month.  That same plan in another state could run $800/month.

You just need to find a broker like us that's licensed to do business where you live.

Most will not cover the pre-existing condition though.

  8. It’s hard to make a specific recommendation without knowing more about your situation, especially where you live.  Health insurance rates and options vary widely from state to state.  In most states, your wife could possibly be turned down for coverage due to her asthma, so that may be a challenge.  You might find an insurance company that will cover her, but it’s possible they will approve coverage for yourself and your kids while declining coverage for her, or at least for all asthma-related services.

The best thing you can do is talk with a licensed agent who represents multiple health insurance companies in your area and who can offer you some frank personal advice.  It doesn’t cost you anything extra to work through an agent.  You can also check out your options online through an agency like eHealthInsurance.com, where I work.  You can get free quotes from leading companies in your area, compare plans side by side, and apply for coverage online.  If you want to talk with one of our licensed agents, give us a call at 1-800-977-8860.

If you find a plan that meets your needs and budget but your wife gets turned down for coverage due to her health history, you may have some other state-sponsored options, depending on where you live.  In that eventuality, take a look at coverageforall.org. They offer free personal assistance and a state-by-state list of the different public options that are available for people who can’t afford or don’t qualify for coverage on their own.

    Good luck!
