Question:

Where can I find the best mofongo and lechon in PUERTO RICO?

We're staying in Dorado but we'll be all over the island. I've heard that Guavate has the best lechoneras, but I need more specifics. For the mofongo, ideally I want to go to a place that specializes in it as opposed to just having it as a side dish. Also I prefer to stay away from tourist traps like Barrachina. Their mofongos are $20 which I think is ridiculous considering the main ingredient is a staple! Thank you in advance for any help!

  1. Go to Burbujas Cafe in Guaynabo and ask them for a mofongo. You'll love it and it won't cost you $20. For Lechon, the best place is Guavate.

  2. Yes, for lechón asado and other typical puertorrican food go to Guavate.  Also try mofongo stuffed with seafood at Piñones (near Isla Verde) or at Palo Seco, Toa Baja (near Dorado).

In Mayaguez (western coast) there is a place called Sancho Panza which have one of the best mofongos I have tasted.

  3. Guavate is know around the island by LA Ruta del Lechon because is full of lechoneras. hahaha. we like it. but the best mofongo i have eated never in my life was in the Restaurants Los Gorditos in PR#1 in Bairoa, Caguas. after you pass the Autozone, and KFC. when you get here the best sauce to mofongo is called Mayo Ketchup. it is a mix of Mayonaise and Ketchup and is a pink sauce. is the best for all the Mofongos, tosotones, Sorullitos, ummmmmmm. i have hungry. and i live 20 minutes from guavate. bad combination. jajajajajaja.

  4. Well I'm not really sure but when we (family) were going to el campo we saw them selling lechon, mofongo, empanadillas and more....

  5. I know a place that its very humble and decent (they even have wooden houses and all kinds of gallos with flamboyan trees, very cultural and at home scene) and are usually locals who go there, and the food its amazing!

its kind of hidden, in bayamon if you go thru rio hondo and then pass levittown going towards la playa punta salina and isla de cabras, when u get to the last light in the coastal beach u either have the choice to make a left or a right. this is when u make a left in the traffic light and go straight, further down passing a burger king and the main entrance of la playa punta salina, u will pass a little cement bridge and in your left hand side u will see a little curve hill going down into a wooden houses, their is a lechonera truck, a frituras truck, a mofongo truck and in the back their is a little ranch house that sells arroz con hueyes (very fresh and clean food), right in front of the sea shore. u will love them big mofongos with any side sea food dish, or plain. I love the lechon there, because its juicy, and does not have that disgusting fat some people sell to u, its very meaty, white meat and crunchy cuero with a juicy flavor. u have to go in the morning because it goes out really fast.

if u get lost, ask locals, they know the place. (it has no name)
