  4. Darjeeling

Makaibari tea holds the world record for the costliest tea @ Rs 22000/- per kg in 2005

First Flush: Incredible prices are paid at the Calcutta auctions each spring for the most stylish or prestigious invoices (lots of usually two to five chests) of Darjeeling's Spring teas. Throughout the '90s each year's priciest tea at auction regularly brought over US$500 per kilo. Except for certain rarities, Chinese and Taiwanese mostly, First Flush Darjeeling is the world's costliest tea. It is much sought after by wealthy Indian buyers, who must compete with brokers acting for German and Japanese importers and the occasional sultan as well.

Not yet a sultan yourself? That's no reason to miss out on Darjeeling's much-revered First Flush tea.

CHENNAI: Can a kilo of black tea cost $ 600? An Indian tea maker has claimed that the black tea produced by the company is the most expensive in the world, and therefore, it should be entered into the Guinness Book of Records.

Glendale Tea estate at Coonoor in Tamil Nadu says the black tea it has made is of SFTGFOP (Super-Fine Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe) grade and fetches a price of $600 for a kilo.

Company officials said the tea had be sold at the world tea expo in March 2006 at Las Vegas for this price.

The claim comes in the wake a rift over the sale of world’s most expensive tea.

According to Vinod Shenai, group manager, Glendale estates, the first claim to enter the Guinness Book of Records was submitted by the company on January 29, 2007. But the Guinness committee sent an email on February 8 rejecting the proposal stating that they already had a record for this category.

“The committee had informed us that the current world record for the most expensive tea is a rare Chinese green tea called Tieguanyin, which costs 1,700 Yuan ($3,000) per kilo (per 2 lb 3 oz) approximately 8.50 Yuan ($15) for a single cup,” he said.

”But we have now sent another letter to the Guinness committee claiming that the Chinese tea is a green tea category and Glendale’s SFTGFOP grade is a black tea grade that has received the highest price in an auction," Shenai said.

He pointed out that there is a huge difference between black tea and green tea and cannot be compared under the same category.

There are costly teas from the  Nilgiri hills (Tamil Nadu, Kerala) as well. Nilgiris teas are grown throughout the year, unlike teas from Darjeeling or Assam. Nilgiris teas are often referred to as "The Fragrant One." The flavor and fragrance of a superior Nilgiris is the result of the high elevation at which it is grown. Nilgiris teas are grown among eucalyptus, blue gum and cypress plants and the tea tends to have a flavor hint of mint/lemon/eucalyptus which is unique just like the Darjeeling tea flavors. -- However, most southern Teas are CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) and not Orthodox Teas as you have in Darjeeling. Munnar and Central Travancore area (Kerala) have Tea estates as well. An exception to the variety and rare unusual tea from the South is Nilgiri Frost Tea, which can be produced only at the highest elevations when a rare frost appears.

Nonsuch is one of the best Nilgiri district teas in league with Tiger Hill and Glendale. The Nilgiri area is in Southern Central India and certainly well suited to the production of tea. The cooler temperatures of the mountains and abundant rainfall ensure superb cropping conditions. Generally Nilgiri teas resemble better Ceylon teas but tend to be somewhat more delicate in their flavour. Nonsuch has a hint of fruitiness that is quite distinct to the Nilgiri area.  Started in 1859, the first commercial teas estates were Thiashola Tea Gardens in the Conoor area  started by Chinese prisoners of the British, during the opium wars.

Nilgiris tea varieties  from the estates include  Tiger Hill, Corsley, Craigmore, Pascoes Woodlands, Colacumby, Nonsuch, Dunsandale, Chamraj, Parkside and Glendale
