Where can I find the motivational story about the poor man's only cow being killed?

The cow being killed was a blessing in disguise, because the farmer had to do something else, and he became successful. Thanks for any help you can give.

Is it in Canterbury tales? One of the stories about greed?

Or is it in the Bible?  Wasn't the guy supposed to lose his wife or Daughter, but he was kind to a stranger (Christ) so he only lost his cow.

In TH White's The Once and Future King Merlin tells Arthur a story like that.
