I am a wildlifer from chandrapur. For my wildlife conservation work, I am planning to buy a GPS set. Shall I need a license to buy this machine. At this very moment I dont know anything about GPS. Which company's set I have to buy? I think GPS can help me a lot in tracking the locations in more scientific manner. Please help me to get all the details of GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS)

  1. I'd get a basic model from Garmin.  They are simple to set up and to use.  You should be able to get one of these for around $100 equivalent.  No you don't need any type of license to use a GPS.  They tap into the military satellite navigation system.

  2. Go to like best buy or walmart and get the TomTom gps. u don't need a license, but they are pretty expensive.  If u go to bestbuy.com and search gps, they tell u a bunch of info

  3. I just realize Chandrapur is in India. I think you will have to check the regulations if registration is needed for GPS device there. We don't need to register GPS device in US.

On selecting the device, there are certain models with higher accuracy than the common one we use in the car. I know people in forestry use require better accuracy GPS models. Aside from the accuracy and reception ability, there is not too much difference. One can download the map for lake, ocean and rivers onto their GPS and make it more suitable for fishing, boating activities, for example. The maps might be company dependent so you will have to study the information from various GPS manufacturers to determine which ones can meet your need in your country.

  4. the shops.

    up to $1000 AUD

    no

  5. If you're going to be monitoring wildlife, then you probably want an offroad GPS rather than a road GPS like the other people answering have suggested.   You can usually get special maps for parks or wildlife habitats you might be touring.

Also, I'm not sure you have a Best Buy in India.  So check the site I've listed in the sources for more information and where to buy a GPS in India.

  6. You can get a pretty inexpensive one that will still be effective enough for the work you want to do.  Go for a Garmin, I use the Legend Model.  They have a couple other models as well, and they run about $100-$150, and are pretty easy to use, and small enough to fit into your pocket.   No, you do not need any sort of license to purchase these.  Not sure what type of stores you have there..but any sporting goods store, or electronics store should carry them.  If not, you can order one online:
