And yes, I do no how much money there will be involved. Allot! lol. I would like to start a business (career) in breeding Shih Tzus. I will be responsible for medical cost and provide a comfortable shelter. I also understand how much time and money I would be putting to per pup. I am doing allot of research. i just need help on where to get the resources for getting a licence or permit for unlimited breeding in the state of California or Oregon. Thank you...

  1. www.puppymill.com

They can give you great advise.

  2. How many bi tches do you intend running?

How often do you intend taking a litter off each one?

What age do you intend taking the first litter off each bi tch?

Will you also keep your own Stud dogs?

  3. Anyone who wants to breed "unlimited" numbers of any dogs are not doing it to improve the breed. They are doing it to make money period. They are greeders not breeders

If you are serious about breeding the right way get just one show quality pup to start with. Put it through it's conformation. When it's 2 get all the heath/genetic testing done. If the dog shapes up well seek one of the fellow Shih Tzu breeders you encountered during your show time with your dog to be your mentor. This person should have been breeding your breed for several years and have a large knowledge of the breed and breeding. They will help you with things such as licencing etc.

Good breeders start slowly. Not with the intention of producing unlimited puppies. You either want to be a good breeder or a greeder. You need to decide before you start. If it's the former then follow what I said and you can't go wrong. If it's the later then don't even do it. There are enough poorly bred Shih Tzu's in shelters produced by greeders who wanted to breed "unlimited" pups.

Edit: A good breeder never breeds his dogs over and over. Most never breed them more than 3 times. 4 At the very most and even then only if they are truly exceptional.

  4. How old are you?

"Unlimited breeding" is starting up a puppy mill business. Read up on puppy mills during your research as well.--are you sure that's what you want to do as a career or hobby?  Breed animals to death?

Nobody who is a successful, reputable breeder does that as a means of supporting themselves, or as a career.  They all have "real" jobs that pay the bills for their love & dedication to their breed of choice.

  5. If you truly love Shih Tzus than you would realize that opening a puppy mill is not the way to show it. Any place that breeds "unlimited" of any breed is a puppy mill.

  6. You don't need a licence to breed dogs in the U.S.  You may need a kennel licences. As a career you will not make any money breeding dogs.  For serious breeders that breed and  show their dogs, breeding is a hobie, not a way to make money.  If done correctly you will put far more money into it them you will ever get back.

If you are serious about breeding go to dog shows, and try and find a breeder that will help you, so you can learn all there is to it.  Including genetics traits and diseases.

  7. Breeding puppies doesn't make money.

EDIT:  You:   "I would like to start a business (career) in breeding Shih Tzus."

    So which is it?

  8. You are doing alot of research but don't know the basic info, whats wrong with this picture

  9. While you seem to be thinking this through, I am REALLY concerned about the "UNLIMITED" part....unless you have MANY bit****, you will kill the one or two you have  by overbreeding.

Are you showing them??? Will the have conformation titles??? Will they have health certificates??? Wil you guarantee them???

If yes to all of the above....good luck to you.

If no....and you are NOT SHOWING THE DOGS AND GETTING TITLES then you may as well be a puppymill...

SOrry...I know that sounds rude but reputable breeders pick their breed first, get the titles, do the research as to who is a good mate for their dog and then breed...AS A SIDELINE....no HONEST and REPUTABLE breeder makes any money at it...It all goes to the shows and medical....

Good luck...I am inm Canada so I have no idea of kennel licenses in California.

  10. making money should not be a reason to breed dogs.  reputable breeders almost never even brake even much less turn a profit.  perhaps you need to rethink this one.
