  1. Here's the poorest countries ranked by GDP per capita (that's the total income of the country divided by the number of people) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Afr...

The list of least developed countries will give you more of an idea about the state of infrastructure http://www.un.org/special-rep/ohrlls/ldc... , this too http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/

  2. The annual UNDP Human Development Report. You can download it from the UNDP web site, or it might be available at your local library.

  3. Why ?  Do you speak an African language ? To do a worthwhile job  that will be very helpful.  What would you do there ?  Can you teach them to farm or tend to their medical needs ?  Figure it all out first.

Start easier.  There are many worth-while causes in your own country.  The poor,  lonely and disabled seniors, habitat for humanity, the people in the Katrina storm/flooding area in Louisiana still need a great deal of help.   Score some successes in your own country before you take on the more complicated challenges.  It will prepare you for Africa.  Good intentions and $1.00 are still only worth  $1.00.

It sounds like you have wonderful ideals.  Try these recommendations and the people you meet who are involved with them can help you best in achieving your greatest goal.
