Ask around at the RSPCA.

Alternatively visit http://www.ausrfsnsw.com/ sign up and ask the same question in one of their forums.  There are people in your area that will be willing to help out your lonely old rattie with a new mate...I would also recommend getting two more rats because the older one will pass on unfortunately soon and then you will be in the same boat again :)
