  1. There are plenty of places on the internet where you can get patterns, which also have the pictures with them and describe exactly what you need to do. You can also buy books with knitting patterns in which tell you exactly when to change colour and what colours to use and have the picture of what you are making in there for you to go by.

  2. It depends on what you are making.  There are programs for making sweaters and socks, and that is about it.  they are also very expensive (like $50).  There are online sock programs, but you would have to figure out the stitch pattern for it and color changes.  If you are doing stripes there is a program that will show you how the stripes will look.

  3. While they are expensive, I've found Sweater Wizard and Stitch and Motif Maker to be well worth the money, especially if you need specialty sizes for your sweaters. www.knittingsoftware.com.  However, there are others out there, including a free color changer at Patons website.
