Peronal wind turbine (for a residential living area) that is power grid integrated?

How much do they normally run? I know some power companies by the extra power put out by the wind turbine. I want a wind turbine that can supply a lot of power to my house.

I live in the mountains and wind is never and issue here. Do you have any links?

  1. Here is a GE sight. Have fun

  2. I'm going to ask my husband, D_Offio, to answer this question for you.  He is a commercial wind turbine tech.

We live in the high mountain desert of Idaho (so know about mountain winds).

We plan to build a house (farm actually) totally off grid.  Hubby is always researching the homeowner grade turbines.

  3. I agree with posting at the top of the page.

  4. www.bergey.com/

    www.skystreamenergy.com

Doesn't anybody know how to use search engines?

  5. Bergey is one manufacturer of small wind turbines.

  6. Here are a few brands and what little I know about them.

    Skystream 3.7

3 bladed traditional wind turbine.  about $6500.00 plus freight and installation costs.

    mag-wind

Savonious Rotor type design.  about $8000.00 plus freight and install.

both of these look good on the power output if you have plenty of wind. Look at your power bill it should show you how many KW/H (Kilowatt Hours) you use in a month.  This will give you a good idea of how much power you need.  Also, if it is windy at night where you live, that is when being grid-tied will be a benefit...the utility is REQUIRED by law to purchase the excess power you produce.  Be forwarned, they are not required to buy your power at the same price that the sell it to you at.  Ask about it with your utility.

As far as the guy that posted the GE website...GE builds COMMERCIAL scale wind turbines.  These machines cost about $2,000,000.00 each installed.  I work on them, and you can take my word on it.

If you live in a residential type area, there may be Covenants that will keep you from putting up a traditional style wind turbine.  Look into the magwind machine if this is the case.  You need about an acre of land to put up a tower style wind turbine, since you do not want ice flying off the blades and striking your house/people, etc...let alone the neighbors place.

There are other machines on the market...spend some quality time with google, you will find others.  There are many varients: 2 bladed rotor, 3 bladed rotor, Savonious Rotor (vertical instead of horizontal), etc.  Try to find power output charts for them...I know that the site for skystream 3.7 has a good chart for their machine.  By the way, 3.7 is the diameter of the rotor disc...in meters.  The blades are about 12 feet long.  Alot of the wind turbines are rated this way instead of by power output which is annoying.

    Hope this helps,

    Offio

  7. I love the ones that I can make, one day this will be mine.

  8. Home Power magazine should be right for you.

There are many manufacturers of the generators and the controllers.  You are talking about a "grid tied" system.  The magazine has free tutorials that may be of interest to you.

A grid tied system has the huge advantage of avoiding the problems inherent with batteries that stand alone systems must use.

Also look at builditsolar.com for more information on wind systems

    Happy greening!
