  1. If you have a Bass Pro or Cabela's they carry those.  Probably even a Radio Shack if there is one in your area.  You might also want to try the web to look up the manufacturers like Garmin or Magellan.  They usually have some way to either purchase them direct or look up retailers in your area.  Make sure you find one that you can enter your own waypoints in, makes things way easier.

  2. Try EBay ... there are often older Magellan or Garmin units there .... the prices are usually reasonable ... I have sold a number of older units there for $30 - $60 ... if a unit is still working after a few years it should be good for a long tine ... the only service item you might need to deal with is an internal memory battery.

  3. US...Wallmart

    Canada...Canadian Tire or Wallmart

    Garmin or Magellin hand held.

  4. We have a Lowrance  I Finder H2O that is perfect for boat,s

Trail,s, MPH, Local Time, Max Speed, Average Speed, Trip time distance traveled, total distance, and battery meter, it came with a charge socket for the cigarette ligher so we use rechargeable batteries,s, and is programmable. The price is OK for what it does,$150.00.

you can also by Lake and ocean chart,s for the Internet.

you probably wont need them because the USA is already installed. Oure,s cam from Acadamy Hunting and Fshing supply store.

  5. Wal mart, or cabellas or a marine store, or sporting goods store like academy

  6. You should check West Marine.

most of the models mentioned so far are not waterproof.  They are Water RESISTANT.

Very few manufacturers will commit to saying thier unit is waterproof.

The only waterproof ones I know of have a separate antenna which is the waterproof part.  The base unit is only water resistant.

There really is no "Cheap, simple, portable" GPS unit.  thats pretty much over-constraining your selection.

There are however, Waterproof Cases for your GPS unit.  There are at least 5 I know of at REI that will hold any of the less expensive Garmin units.

There is a waterproof case availalbe for the new Triton2000, but that may be too expensive (300-400$)

Now about your needs for Cruising:  a Cheap GPS unit will only have a b/w screen and very simple mapping capabilities.  If you plan to upload topo or marine charts you will need a better unit (Triton 300).

If all you want to do is plot out your position on a paper chart, go with the cheap unit with a waterproof case.
