Question:

Where can I get a simple program to chart family history without all the other needless features?

I'm charting two family trees - my own, and one for a mythical family. I'd like a program that simply allows me to chart out a relationship tree but doesn't sync with online genealogy sites or google earth or etc. A clear graphic of the family members and their relations without all the added glitz. Though the ability to add photos and lengthy notes on each member would be ideal.

  1. You can try these:

    FREE TREE MAKERS

    www.myheritage.com

    http://www.familytreeguide.com/

    http://www.familysearch.org

It is called Personal Ancestral File or PAF 5.3

It is complete and free, no extras, no catches or hassles.

and you keep control of it on your computer and/or disk

Or do as I do: use your word processor and type in what you want. If you are good, you can use a data bank and create the fields you want. The problem with ALL of the programs, if your computer crashes, if the original program becomes corrupt, you lose all your data. It has happened to me more than once.

  2. This is an excellent free one, you can add notes, photos, video etc. And you can print out various charts.

  3. Definetly use familysearch.org

Be careful though; you may discover you like the mythical family better than your real family.

    (I know I would.)

  4. The above is a great site (familysearch) but I did just hear about a site that's free and I'm impressed - www.geni.com where you can build your family tree.  Check it out.

  5. Personal ancestral file (above) is the classic, from the LDS church, and free.

Personally, I like your style.  I really think people spend more time concerned about bells/whistles on programs, than the info they PUT INTO the program.  You would be amazed how many people have no idea that they can do genealogy, without uploading it to a website.

    OK, done ranting.
