I'm a vegetarian active runner and have reason to believe that I'm not getting my period because of lack of iron

I already take a multivitamin thats supposed to have 100% DV of iron in it...but from where else can I get sources of iron?

  1. Dried beans and leafy greens.

  2. I swear by tomato juice. It helps you retain iron and will prevent cramps. If you just quit having your period that's not good. Maybe see a doctor?

  3. First, check with your doctor to make sure that is the reason you are not getting your period. One reason may be that you may not have enough body fat- that can happen with athletes. Or you may have another health condition that needs to be addressed.

In addition to multivitamins, I make sure that I eat green leafy veggies, like spinach, and I try to eat them with some source of vitamin c to help with iron absorption (like tomatoes).  I also eat cereals that are fortified with iron.

    Hope this helps.

  4. spinach, nuts, and beans

  5. Hi!

Good sources of iron for vegetarians include wholegrain cereals and flours, leafy green vegetables, blackstrap molasses, pulses such as lentils and kidney beans, and some dried fruits.

GOOD sources include apricots, beans and bran flakes.

FAIR sources include eggs, brocolli and peanut butter

POOR sources include bananas, cheese and yogurt
