  1. I don't have a tidy answer -- only a messy one.  When I was packing to move from MS to IL in '04, I tried grocery stores, got nothing.  So, at a friend's suggestion, I went raiding stores' dumpsters.  Found quite a few useful boxes.  Bought some.  Expensive.  Best deal was going to the moving company's local office/warehouse/etc.  In the warehouse, they had stacks of used moving boxes that had been opened all the way and flattened. Beautiful.  I made two trips.

  2. Go to some of your local grocery stores, and ask the manager if you can take some boxes from the back of the store. Groceries receive daily deliveries and often discard heavy cardboard boxes. They will most likely be glad to be rid of them. Go to the back of the store, and pick out the nicest, sturdiest boxes for your packing.

  3. I think Uhaul gives out free boxes. I'm not sure though.

  4. If you go to Walmart or another big store that sell bananas, they will have banana boxes that are very sturdy, have a top and bottom and if you ask nicely, they will usually give you all you can haul.  They have holes for your hands and slip together and stack nicely.  You may need to put another piece of carboard in the bottom to reinforce the area that is open or they may come with a thin piece of carboard that will work okay.

  5. i defiantly agree with bub they are free and work great its what i always use

  6. My local U-haul usually has used boxes that are free for the taking.  Check local businesses, too.  They're usually behind the store.
