Question:

Where can I get help and information on keeping a whole litter of puppies?

We had a stray that looks like a black & tan show up at the house one day and she was in terrible shape. We decided to adopt her and keep her as an outside pet (we have five inside dogs). Before we could get her spayed, she had a very healthy litter of puppies (nine). The two towns close to us have really cracked down on their pet ordinances and more and more dogs and cats are ending up on the side of the road (we have since adopted two more dogs from the side of the road). I don't want to give the puppies away for fear that they will end up thrown out or mistreated as well.

Because of this, we want to keep and raise the puppies as our own pets (having them all spayed/neutered at the earliest opportunity, of course), but I'm thinking there might be problems with behavior and such with so many that have grown up together. These are going to be big dogs, 50-60 pounds each. We live on three acres in the country and I was going to fence in about half of it for them.

Does anyone have good advice on raising, training and managing a litter as a pet? Where can I get information? Thanks!

  1. I've been working with dogs for nearly 30 years, and I wouldn't even attempt this.

Just make sure you screen potential homes well.  Talk to some of the rescue organizations in your area for advice on placing pups.
