Where can I get (in/around London or just generally)...?

Question

...scrap materials like metal or plastic?

I don't need much ( roughly a 30cm-squared sheet in total of metal or plastic)

Can I find and freely take what i need at dump yards?

Are there any businesses or recycle groups that give away or sell cheaply scrap materials, just as Timber merchants sell off-cuts?

I live in London (uk) so anywhere around or in london would be great!

Your best bet would be to get hold of an old washing machine or tumble drier and cut the required sized piece of metal from this.

There are lots of busted electrical goods at recycling centres nationwide, just find a friendly assistant and your laughing!!!

construction sites. I'm sure they won't mind. They will have loads of cut offs.
