  1. Since you are young and healthy then you will most likely be able to find very cheap individual health insurance. Individual health insurance is cheaper than group health insurance (in most states) because with individiual health insurance you have to be somewhat healthy to be accepted onto the plan while with group health insurance everyone is accepted no matter what their health may be.

Think of it kind of like this: individual health insurance is much cheaper because the insurance company gets to pick and choose who they will accept onto their plan (so they will only choose the healthy people because the pose less risk to the insurance company to insure). Group health insurance is much more expensive because the insurance company has to accept everyone that applies onto the plan (even those with expensive health problems). This brings the cost up for everyone that is on the group plan.

In a nutshell, join your group plan only if your employer will pay for your coverage. Purchase individual health insurance or short term health insurance when you are not able to get group coverage from an employer for free.

You are healthy and young so you can easily find cheap short term health insurance.

  5. If you only need it for four months you'll need to get a short term medical policy. You can contact any local independent agent to find one. They are designed for people waiting for insurance. They are inexpensive and don't have all the bells and whistles but they'll cover you for catastrophic accidents or illnesses. However, they won't cover any pre-existing conditions.

  6. There is no such thing as inexpensive health insurance. It is always expensive. Take care of yourself for the next four months and hope that the job you get will cover some or all of your health insurance costs.
