Hi, I've got some programmes on VHS video I want to put onto CD/digital for future use, before chucking the old vids away. Does anyone know of anywhere on the UK High Street that can do this? Or anywhere else for that matter?

Cheers

Martin

  1. Depending on the quantity, it would probably be cheaper to buy a DVD recorder, better yet,  an HDD-DVD recorder.  That way you can record your own programmes, AND, edit out any blank bits, adverts and trailers that you don't want.

A good HDD-DVD (hard-disk drive - DVD) recorder can be bought for about £50 to £75 on eBay.  I bought a Sony HDD-DVD recorder for £70 toward the end of last year, and it's never been out of a job!  and remember that it will always be there for future TV programmes that you may want to record.

All you'd need to do is to record the VHS videos onto the HDD via a SCART connection.  Then, edit it (if necessary) before copying the programme from the HDD onto a blank DVD-R.  The good news is that blank DVDs can cost as little as 20p each, and that gives you recording space for upto 2 hours.

There is very little degradation in signal quality between VHS and HDD, and absolutely no loss at all between HDD and DVD.

  2. everyone here is suggesting differnet methods, how about i answer your actual question!

basically, none of the big high street names have a service like this. what you are looking for is the sole trader computer shop/ camera shop / internet cafe that isnt part of a chain and can help you out for a small fee

a cheaper option may be to find a tech savvy friend / child of friend who can do it for you for a small fee/ gift

i guess you can also try 'The tech guys' as they are pretty flexible compared to most places. I took my Pc in on a sunday and they were so quiet they fixed it for free in 10 minutes and gave me a 50 percent discount on norton 360. so they mite do it out of the kindness of their heart

also, if you know of a local videographer that might have the equipment he or she could do it for a small fee. your looking for the kind of guy you hire to film weddings or mayoral visits :D

  3. If you have a few vids to do, why not buy yourself a combination vhs/dvd recorder. Not very expensive these days, I've seen them in Asda (Wall Mart to our American friends) can't remember how much but it seemed reasonable to me.
