You should check with your local library.  My local library has a link on their website that directs me to a site they partner with to allow me to "check out" (download for a short period) audio books.  If you are a member of the library, it should be a free service.  Also, your library should have some audio books on hand, which you can check out.  My library has these little units that just need a battery and you can put your own headphones in and listen without any special equipment.
