  1. NEWEGG.com has ratings and feedback by people who have purchased different brands, models, and options.

they will give you the lowdown on all the latest stuff, and tell you the good, bad, and crappy so you don't get a dud.

  2. If it's just you watching the best value are cordless headphones: buy a good brand.

  3. We waste all day trying to find ways to get $10,000 worth of sound out of only $1,000 worth of electronics.  Most of the setups we come up with are pieced together from CircuitCity's and BestBuy's low-end stock.  It's not how much you spend...it's how you hook it together.  Click the link: http://www.avtruths.com/bangforbuck.html

  4. For middleclass people, Pioneer and Onkyo make the best AV recievers in the 400-500 range, go with velodyne for a 350 sub, boston acoustics, polk and klipsch for inexpensive speakers 700 a pair. Use similar name brand and series for your center channel and rears so that the "timbre" matches each other. I have the Onkyo 605 which does Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD and video upconverting. I have polk rti12 (now discontinued) csi3 center, psw10 sub and rti6 rears. I'm using mid quality hdmi cable from monoprice and just plain 12 guage speakerwire, NOT monster cable.

If you need a HTIB, (all componts purchaced at the same time) Onkyo makes "champagne on a beer budget" home theare set ups that are excellent. We have the  Onkyo HT-SP908B about 700 in our small living room and we love it. My daughter has the Onkyo HT-SR800 about 350 in her bedroom. Onkyo is well known to us audiophiles with very little cash but picky ears.
