Question:

Where can I go to brew my own beer?

A few years ago there used to be stores, for lack of a better word where you could go and brew your own beer. The store would help you out and you were allowed to create your own cute labels and name your beer. Is there anywhere local to San Jose, CA that still offers this fun experience?

  1. I live in San Jose.  The last place I remember that even sold supplies was on Winchester.  (Across Winchester from St. Lucy's.)  It closed down about 10 years ago.  I suggest you either buy a beer making kit and follow directions, or buy a brewing book and equipment.  The first option is the cheapest, but the second option gives the best quality beer.  Do a search on home brew beer and you'll find many kits, books, equipment and supply sources.

  2. You can get a Coopers kit at Amazon. I got it for my boyfriend for Christmas last year and he LOVES it. You can get all different kinds of beers...

  3. You're looking for a brew-on-premises shop.  Check your local phone book for  wine and beer makers supplies and equipment, OR brewers.

I did that for my first two batches of beer For the first batch I added yeast to a pre-made wort, and canned it when it was finished. For the second one I actually cooked it with the shop owner's help, and bottled it.

After that, I wanted to get more involved in the process, so I bought my own equipment, but I'm glad I was shown how to brew a bit.   If you would like to know more about home brewing, I recommend reading http://www.howtobrew.com
