I have family problem I need to resolve ASAP. It's way too confusing to explain. I cannot trace through birth certificates either. There is a possibility that several of them could be wrong because of false information. But if I was to prove what ethnicity's I have in my bloodline, it would solve everything.

  1. Ethnicity are vague with DNA testing. It will classify you such as Northern European, East Asian etc but no specific ethnicities.

Also to get a correct view it has to be with autosomal DNA.  Y and Mitochondrial are really just a minute portion of your DNA.  They are used because they go directly down specific lines.

Y DNA is passed from father to son only.

Mitchondrial DNA is passed from mother to both sons and daughters but only the daughters pass it on to their children.

Most of your DNA is autosomal.  You get it 50-50 from both parents.  It is the only DNA that relates a female to her father or anyone to the spouses and their families of their ancestors with their Y & Mitochondrial DNA.  You get things like your pigmentation(eye, skin etc) and your height etc.  Also, for instance, I have a bone structure anomaly in my left foot.  I apparently got it from my maternal grandfather. He is not in my mitochondrial line and I don't have Y DNA.

My older sister's granddaughter had the same anomaly in her right foot. They compared my xrays taking when I was about 37 to hers when she was 3.  It skipped 3 generations.  My mother didn't have it.  My sister and my nepew were born with flat feet like my father and this anomaly is a very high arch where a bone is missing at the arch.   I have a distant cousin whose mother had it and he had a great grandchild with the problem.  So, what I am trying to say to let you know that all those people not in your Y & Mitochondrial lines are definitely a part of you.

If you go back to your 6xgreat grandparents you are directly descended from 510 individuals.  It pyramids.  Out of those 510 you have mitochondrial DNA from 8 and if you are a male, you have Y DNA from 8. You have autosomal DNA from all 510.
