If you can't suggest a car hire company where the cars have sat nav, can anyone recommend a good street map of Auckland?

  1. For inter-city travel I prefer Automobile Assoc maps.  If you're a member in your country, there should be reciprocal rights.

Wises is my prefered city map book, but you can download maps online.  www.wises.co.nz

    Safe travels

  2. There's heaps of rental car companies and you can pick up a car from $25 to $105 per day. Be aware that you get what you pay for.

The better companies will provide maps, but so too will Mobil, Shell, BP and the AA, (plus Jasons, Wises and UBD).

The roads are fairly well sign posted, don't drive so fast that you miss being able to read the signs.

There are no rental companies that provide SatNav, but you can of course provide your own. d**k Smith Electronics sell them reasonably cheap.

Driver T, and Hey----enjoy yourself while you're here.

PS, the answer will not show d**k Smith as it ought, so the company name is D and then an eye, and a sea and then a kay.

Political correctness and censorship has gone completely overboard here.

  3. There are several car hire places at Auckland airport - Avis, Hertz, Budget, etc.  Most have Sat. Nav.  You need to request it when you book.

The Wises street directory for Auckland is "the" map book and costs about $20 from memory.  I would try and get a car with Sat. Nav. though as Auckland is a big city and can be a bit confusing.

There are also online maps like http://www.smaps.co.nz/ - where you can plan out a route in advance.

  4. If you pick up the car from and return it to Auckland Airport, then 'Avis' can provide you with a Navman navigation system. However, the cost and the increased excess probably makes it uneconomic and a decent printed road map will prove to be just as helpful. I like the 'Kiwimaps' series which is called 'Kiwi Pathfinder', which you can get from most book/magazine stores or petrol stations.

  5. After you have hired the car in NZ with the "Satellite Navigation", check the position of Australia and you will see its thousands of kl from NZ and we are two different country's

  6. Buy a road atlas for a few dollars mate.

NZ is a thinly populated country with no fuss, direct as they can be open roads from A to B. You won't get lost.
