  1. join a gun club and use their range,

  2. Go to a rifle range or go out of the city limits!*

  3. Go to this website for information on public game lands and regulations concerning hunting and shooting.

    http://www.ncwildlife.org/

There are no NC state parks that I know of that allow shooting or even possessing firearms.  National Forests do not prohibit discharging firearms, but check with their local office for specific regulations and required permits.  National Forests in NC are: Croatan (coastal) Pisgah, Nantahala (mountains) Uwharrie (Piedmont or Central).  You can shoot on private property with permission of the landowner as long as it's not in a city limits.  Different counties have different regulations such as hunting or shooting within certain distances from a road or dwelling, so the best thing to do is to carefully read the NC Wildlife Resources Regulations (either from the website or pick up a copy from your local sporting goods shop).  You can also email the WRC or contact your local Wildlife Officer for specific information (that's probably the best thing to do anyway).  Just call or email the WRC and they'll tell you how to contact your local WRO. There's always shooting ranges too.

A high powered rifle to me, and this is just my opinion, is any rifle other than a .22.  Remember that even a .22 round can travel over a mile if it's fired at an angle into the air.  Finally, no matter where you shoot follow ALL firearm safety rules and especially make sure of your backstop.  A little girl that was horseback riding with her mom was killed a few years back by a guy that was shooting an SKS rifle up in the air over a mile away.  That happened near where I live, and there's no excuse for being careless or unsafe with any firearm.

  4. as long as you aren't on someone's property who doesn't approve and you aren't inside city limits somewhere you're good to go with a rifle in nc. people could call the cops on you for hearing gunfire but if you're not shooting after dark or endangering their property there's no legal action that can be taken

  5. State parks that allow hunting, at a shooting range, outside of city limits on private property. And high powered rifle is generally thought of as anything besides an air rifle, even though some of those can be considered high power as well.

  6. Go and visit your local police station.
