  1. the d,v.l,a Webb site

  2. Dennis 1:  Nearly right. it was Suffix letters from 1963, prefix letters from 1983

Letter Q was used from October 1975 (Creation of DVLA at Swansea) for 'vehicles of indeterminable age'

  3. Go to the Department of Vehicle Licensing website where I am sure they will have a link.  Other than that, for the record, a car registered with "08" is Jan-June 2008, "58" will be July-December 2008, with the 0 reflecting first six months of the year, the 8 representing the year; and the 5 representing the second half of the year and the 8 representing the year.  Earlier ones are reflected by ordinary letters A-Y, no O and no Z.

  4. Don't know, but the prefix letters started in 1963 with the Letter "A" as the last letter on the plate.

    The letters I (i) - O - Q - U - Z were not used.

  6. Dan B is spot on with the years 1963 to 2001.  Christine is not quite right in the later years.  The changeover dates are 1st September and 1st March:

    51 Sept 01 to Feb 02

    02 Mar 02 to Aug 02

    52 Sept 02 to Feb 03

    03 Mar 03 to Aug 03

    53 Sept 03 to Feb 04

    04 Mar 04 to Aug 04

    54 Sept 04 to Feb 05

    05 Mar 05 to Aug 05

    55 Sept 05 to Feb 06

    06 Mar 06 to Aug 06

    56 Sept 06 to Feb 07

    07 Mar 07 to Aug 07

    57 Sept 07 to Feb 08

    08 Mar 08 to Aug 08

    58 Sept 08 to Feb 09

and so on right up to February 2051 when I imagine they would have to invert the plates, assuming that licence plates are used then and not some automated vehicle detection system.
