I'm getting off a cruise ship and want to drive around the Tuscan countryside with a friend, rather than paying 500 euros for a driver. I've driven in Italy before.

  1. Just remember that renting a car is not cheap in Italy. Between the cost of the cab to get to the rental agency (I'm guessing there aren't any right in the port), rental costs, high gas prices, tolls, parking etc...you may want to rethink having a driver which allows you to be more of a tourist.

That said, some of the major U.S. car rental companies have outlets in Italy. I'm not sure about Livorno but check the following companies websites (you can go to the English-language versions, they will give you international information)

Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, Budget -- I'd guess that the first two are more likely to be there than others.

A European rental agency that is all over is Europcar. Or try the AutoEurope website -- www.autoeurope.com -- which is a consolidator that will found you a car where you need it.

  2. i'm italian, here we have an agency called "avis" that rent cars in all italy... i can give you the website, www.avisautonoleggio.it, but the problem is that the website in just on the italian language.. probably you can send an e-mail to them. just pay attenction to dont confise the avis-renting cars with another avis, who is an agency for the blood free donation.. ehehe.. ciao! have a nice trip...

however, if you go to tuscany, remember to take a lot of times to see florence.. i was there yesterday and is a wonderful city...

    ciao!
