I will be visiting relatives in Spain through the month of september, spending time in both Leon and Madrid. I would love to see a Bull Fight, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Also, is there anywhere in Spain I should see? I know I am an eighth Basque, so I was considering going to Pamplona or Navarra as well.

  1. Yes u may go to Pamplona

  2. I don't support bullfighting but I guess the best way to make a personal judgement is attending a "corrida". I've been checking the schedule and nearest main event near to either Leon or Madrid is in Valladolid (125 miles from Leon). They will be having the "Feria y Fiestas de la Virgen de San Lorenzo 2006" from Sept. 2nd to 10th.

They have a "corrida" everyday at 6pm but you better try to get the tickets earlier. Prices go from 30 to 70€ aprox. depending on how far from the bullring and if your seat is in the sun or in the shadow. Check prices on

By the way, the last corrida in Valladolid is "corrida de rejones". It means that they bullfight on horses... For me it's way much more beautiful 'cause a bad regular "corrida" can be very boring sometimes.

In Madrid you only have 2 "novilladas" on Sept. 3rd and 10th. "Novillada" means that the bulls are 3 years or less and the toreros are usually young (16-18) that wants to become famous matadores. This kind of "corridas" are cheaper and more fun 'cause the guys try hard to get a good name and the bulls are usually very fast so you can see some "accidents" sometimes.

Anyway, be ready to see blood and poor animals trying to stand up while being punched. In the other hand, you'll see something that will impress you.

About basque thing... Formerly Pamplona (Navarra) is not part of Basque Country. The Basque independentists claim that Navarra and the French Basque Country is part of the Basque Country. It's just a pollitical issue about which you'll find many opinions depending on who you ask about. So, if you really wanna see the Basque Country, definetely go to San Sebastian (Donosti in Basque language). It's a very beautiful city with great food and great people. Just don't touch the independence issue if you want to have a nice time there.

Madrid is nice (I live there). Just watch the pickpockets in the touristic areas and in the underground. If you have an extra day go to Toledo by train or bus. It's just 80 miles and you'd love it. If you're into soccer I strongly recommend you go to a Real Madrid game. The Stadium is great and you may like it more than bullfighting.
