  1. look for yourself at this web site, from B/B to a full appartment.

    One particularly interesting place is:

Trastevere is the most picturesque corner I know.

  2. Rome is quite expensive for hotels so it depends on your budget. We were on a tight budget and stayed in a hostel about 5 mins walk from Termini, not the best area but it was really handy being close to the station coz we could get the metro to the main sights and the metro is so quick, frequent, clean and cheap. You can stay anywhere in Rome and even if you are not staying right next to the sights you can easily walk or get the metro. Have a fab time!

  3. Hotels have lots of rooms for people staying in Rome.

    What a dumb question

  4. A few years ago, I spent 10 days in Rome.  I rented a very nice studio apartment from www.guestinitaly.com.  They have lots of apartments available.  The one I chose was convenient to Stazione San Pietro (St. Peters metro station) and several bus lines.  I walked to all the historic sites:  Vatican City, il Colosseo, Piazza Navona, Piazza del Popolo, etc.  The only time I took the bus was when it was raining or I got tired of walking.

  5. I use the venere.com site for booking hotels here in Italy. There are over 500 hotels for Rome in their database. You can use a map to sort for a particular district in the city you're interested in and then sort by price, guest rating,... http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/#o=defa... The site has a lot of reviews by previous guests to get an idea of what to expect from the area, the hotel, and the staff.

Any of the central districts in Rome are convenient for sightseeing. The area around the Roma Termini train station is cheaper, but a little further from the sites. It is still walkable though, and there are good public transportation connections.

The Trevi, Colosseo Foro Romano, Pantheon, Navonna, and Piazza di Spagna districts, as shown on the venere map, are all within easy walking distance of all the major sights.

If you're looking for cheap and close to the attractions in Rome, a good option may be the Hotel Romano http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse... It's very close to the Forum & Colosseum and within walking distance of two metro stops and the Termini train station.

If you're looking for something a little more upscale, the Hotel Regno and Hotel Cesari, both located between the Pantheon Trevi Fountain, are very good. Hotel Regno is a particularly good bargain. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/fontana... http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/pantheo...

The Capo d'Africa near the Colosseum is very nice, but may be more expensive than what you're looking for. It depends on what you consider affordable and exactly when you're going. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse...

A good option for public transportation in Rome is the Roma Pass http://www.romapass.it/english/lecard.ht... It includes free access to the underground, the bus system, some trains for a three day period and includes maps of the transportation. You also get free admission to a couple of attractions and discounts to others.

You might also be interested in a accomodations at a convent or monastery in Italy. These tend to be some of the best lodging bargains available. There are a number of them in Rome. In some places in Italy, a monestary stay may be free. see: http://www.monasterystays.com/?show=page... or http://www.santasusanna.org/comingtorome... for information.

I don't know whether they acept families with small children though. My brother and his wife stayed in one and recommended it. A nephew and his wife also stayed in a convent in Rome and agreed it was a good experience.

  6. It depends on your budget. Rome can be expensive, check out priceline.com.

  7. www.venere.com is a good hotel site.

I recommend getting a small apartment.  This can save you lots of money.  The ability to have access to a small kitchen is awesome.  One year we rented an apartment that had a washer and dryer--It made a huge difference in our quality of stay.  I like the Prati neighborhood for convenience to food, sites, and public transportation.

  8. Moven pick, im not sure if that is how you spell it, but it was a nice hotel. if you want something close to the airport stay at the hilton garden suites it was really nice.

  9. I would recommend Hotel Pineta Palace, on the outskirts of Rome so not as expensive but really nice hotel. It is pretty close to St. Peters. Our room had a balcony view of the Dome. There are also hostels if you are traveling alone and want to meet others. You can find info about Hotel Pineta Palace on yahoo travel.

  10. A great area to stay in is Campo di Fiore, which is a main square close to the ruins and the Vatican. Campo di Fiore is fun because during the day it is a farmers market, then at night all the locals come out and meander about. There are wine bars, restaurants, shopping and street performers. across the main street is Piazza Novana, which is where all the artists hang out.

ps do not stay near the train station unless you want to get mugged.
