Where can I stay on a limited budget ($100 per night) in Mumbai, India?

I will be visiting Mumbai as a tourist (even though I'm ethnically Indian) in the November/December timeframe and am looking for a room for two in a decent hotel or service apartment as close to downtown Mumbai as possible. An initial web search has shocked me to no end as to how expensive the hotels are in Mumbai. I currently live in New York City, and the Waldorf Astoria isn't even as expensive as some of the hotels in Mumbai. I'm having a very difficult time wrapping my head around the fact that I could be spending more money for a hotel in a 3rd world country than in the US! Are there other options?

  3. As you have found out, Mumbai is one of the most expensive places to stay and indeed live in the world. However it can also be one of the cheapest. In Colaba causeway close to the gateway to India there are also some very cheap hotels and indeed very reasonably priced ones. Theres a place walled Godwin which was nice and cost about 60 USD per night and there are plenty of other ones that are easy to find, or, buy a copy of a guide book and you can find basic and I mean basic "hotels" for under 600Rp ( or about 15USD). I am not sure if India is still classed as 3rd world, I am sure its now classed as a developing economy. Mumbai is Indias financial centres as well as the home of Bollywood where it is not unheard of for a Producers to buy the lead actor a new Rolls Royce (or other lavish gift) as a Thank you for a sucessfull movie.
