I'm a high school student, 9th grade, now into my 2nd semester, and I wanna get this monkey off my back before it turns into a gorilla of a problem (sry for the stupid joke, it comes with the expression). Can someone give me some ideas, preferably, a list of ideas, so that I have more options. (e.g. volunteer at the library.... But I already tried it.... They said no... T-T)

  1. If your city has a human society for animals go there.

  2. Try using the Volunteer Match website. You can search for volunteer opportunities, where teens can volunteer, in your community.

    Volunteer Match

    http://www.volunteermatch.org/results/

  3. I did my high school service hours done at the soup kitchen, helped at elementary schools, retirement homes, hospitals...there are lots of places like that

  4. if ur town has a community theater that works! you get like 3x that amount and its fun! unless u have stage fright..

  5. Old folks home -- they always enjoy the company, many of them don't have any relatives who visit.

Animal shelter / Humane society -- as the first answerer said... quite a good idea, because these dogs are often not walked unless volunteers come in to do it (I've volunteered at one myself)

school functions -- ask your school if they offer any opportunities, I got several of my hours doing security for a pow-wow (there's a lot of natives in my area) and other school functions.

Dances -- held at public schools or churches, they often need older teens to supervise, I got most of my hours chaperoning at dances such as these when I was in grade nine and ten.

  6. VFW

  7. You can find a HUGE variety of volunteering programs in your area via these web sites:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site, http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

All list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations.

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you can help the next time disaster strikes:

    http://www.helpindisaster.org/

  8. There's a wealth of places where you can volunteer but why not use this requirement to your advantage.

List the areas that you are most interested in for a future career.

Then see what volunteer opportunities are available close to what you'd like to do eventually.

Many big cities have a listing of volunteer opportunities at their official city web site.

Don't get discouraged because the library didn't need another volunteer.  You can find a much more interesting volunteer experience.

Look in your telephone book for a  list of "non-profits".  Any of them can use volunteers.
