I'm interesting in getting some experience teaching english before I go abroad later this summer, but everything I see is for Americans to volunteer overseas, etc. Does anyone know of some organization I can volunteer with locally? Local being Texas.

  1. Catholic Social Services has a "Refugee Resettlement" program. They would welcome the help. I also agree with the above poster who recommended contacting local elementary schools.

Lots of good leads at this link:

  2. Try talking to your local school district about assisting in the ESL program. Some local churches also should do ESL programs, call around to see if they need/want volunteers. Going abroad is going to a more rewarding and enriching experience, but staying locally is an awesome, exciting thing to do as well. I volunteered with Josiah Venture in the Czech Republic 2 summers in a row teaching english to teens.  Just be patient and take initiative, something will come up.
