I am considering to move to Manhattan, but before I make up my mind I need to know where I can go windsurfing on a regular basis. What are the places, wind conditions, wind patterns, typical sail sizes. Etc.

  1. At the Jersey shore!!!

There is a beach at Gateway National Park at Sandy Hook.  It is called cove beach. Park there and instead of going to the ocean go to the bayside. Sandy Hook Bay is tidal,3-4 foot tides, & it is salt water.

it has a  sandy beach & alot of windsurfers. Showers at concession on oceanside.

About 45mins to 1 hr from NYC.take Parkway  & exit 117 to Rte36 South to Sandy Hook, Highlands, NJ

Free 9 months of the year. Summer is $10 a carful.

^ Click on the NY links in the American listings on the left of the screen. It will give you the location, wind conditions, cautions etc. of all the clubs where you can windsurf in NY state.  It's really convenient.

  3. Manhattan windsurfers usually travel to New Jersey or Long Island to windsurf.     We get any and all wind strengths...at 165 lbs I have sails from 3.4 to 7.0, with the larger sails being used most often.

Here is a link to a map of Long Island windsurfing locations:

Here is a link to a bulletin board for Long Island windsurfing...you need to join, but once you have people will address your questions:

Here is a url for a New Jersey windsurfing shop that can better address Jersey sailing:
