  1. you must be registed with a tribe to get the education benefits. contact your local bureau of indian affairs. you will need ansestory information.

  2. The only University for American Indians in the US is Haskell Indian Nations University located in Lawrence, KS.  It is not free but it is subsidized.  You have to be an enrolled member/citizen of a US Federally Recognized Tribe OR at least 1/4 degree by blood with proof via CDIB.

If you're interested in a technical school, Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) is in Alb., NM.  Again, not free but subsidized and the same criteria apply as far as tribal enrollment and minimum blood quantum.

If you're interested in art, the Institute of American Indian Arts is located in Arizona.  Not free and actually pretty expensive.

Other schools, such as the University of Minnesota at Morris offer programs for American Indian students.  These schools also require tribal enrollment and/or minimum blood quantum.

While these schools and others like them provide educational programs for American Indians, they are not free.  You will still be expected to come up with funding via scholarships, grants and student loans.

  3. Just because your Native American doesn't mean you can go to college. Community college is an option. Mind you it doesn't always give courses in areas you would like to have a career in. But, even community college isn't free so be prepared to pay.

EDIT: OMG I'm so sorry I forgot to add free at the end of the first sentance. I'm SO SORRY! Didn't mean anything offensive just a typo.

  4. Benefits are only available to those who are members of a Federally Recognized Tribe or Nation.

Now about tuition assistance. There is no free ride! I would bet there are 100's of students that are members of the tribe that are applying for help, you would just be one more in the stack, and since I assume you are NOT living on the reservation and would not use your college education to help the tribe, the chance of your being selected to receive assistance would be slim. The tribes don't just have money laying around to help all that need it, many young adults living on the reservations don't get the help they so desperately need. So I would ask that if you are just looking for a handout, DON'T, there are many more deserving people that can put the money and education to work for the tribe.
