Question:

Where can a 28 year old Army Veteran play college baseball?

So I'm 28 years old. I've got a total of almost 9 years service time in the Army. I'll be 29 shortly after I get out. I have almost 40 credit hours of college, but no time participating in college sports. I know I'm eligible, that's not the issue. The issue is finding a school where my chances of playing are greater. That's where I need help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  1. Wouldn't it depend on how good you are?

If you have minor-league talent, than I'd imagine most college programs would at least look at you.

If you were good in high school, but haven't played in a while, I'd look at smaller schools (DII or DIII) since their scholarships work a bit differently (as opposed to D1 programs who almost exclusively use scholarship players). Best of luck to you no matter what you decide to do.

  2. Best bet would be a D3 or JUCO.

I would make sure of eligibility if you are looking for D1 or 1AA.  I found out that to play at D1 level, you have 5 years to play four from the time you first enroll at that level.

  3. Well first off it really depends on your location. Like where are you willing to go. I'm a senior in high school now and I'm going to be doing the same thing you are, searching for a college that I'll have a good chance of finding playing time. If you really believe you have skills to play at the D1 or D2 level, then go to a school of your choices sport website and contact the athletic department for baseball, ask if there are any open tryouts, which some colleges do. I'm not sure if I remember clearly, but I think UC Irvine has open tryouts so check them out.

Here's just a small random list of colleges with baseball teams you might be able to make as a walk on:

    1. Cal Poly Pomona

    2. Mt. San Antonio College

    3. Fullerton College

Also, just in case you might want to play in a league to maybe work out some kinks go to www.pcbl.com, its for players over the age of 18 and they have 3 leagues; one for Orange County, Los Angeles, and a Mid Week Bat League, which is basically weekday games. Good Luck!
