I can be that size or a little bigger. I went to lowes the other day and they dont have anything that big. The type of wood doesnt matter as long as it relatively cheap.

  1. That's a pretty big chunk.  No normal retail place will carry it.  You could make it yourself, by laminating smaller wood pieces together with glue and clamps.

If I were to need this, I would go to an independent sawmill.  You can get custom cuts there, and they would be the most likely to have a tree trunk around that is about 20" across, which is what is needed to provide your dimensions.

  2. home depot.. a hardware store down the street....

  3. It will depend on your definition of "cheap".  Your best chance will be to get a 4x18x whatever.  You can contact a local framer and they can tell you where to get it.  If it is something decorative, you should consider nailing dimensional lumber to get to the desired size, it will cost a lot less.  If an engineer specified that exact size, then that option is out.

  4. try home depot or go into the woods and chop down a tree!

  5. around here i would find a mill that is cutting hemlock as that is your best bet for something that wide...
