Where can a student backpacker go for an inexpensive breakfast in Marseille France? And what can I do for fun?

You can get pastries for less at a bakery (patisserie). Some supermarkets will have a bakery section, too.  Eating at cafes and restaurants can be expensive.  Some hotels include breakfast (bread and cafe au lait) as part of the accomodations.  Fun?  Just spend an hour or two walking around town. Museums are affordable fun too (not free but usually reasonably priced).  If you are a student, bring your student ID (they may or may not recognize a US student id but many nice museum personnel will go ahead and give you the student rate if you have the id).  Pack light.  Heavy luggage is a bummer and some train stations have only stairs (no elevators).

you can have a croissant and café at " bar de la marine" the most famous café in arseille, directly on the "vieux port", on the other side of city hall, not really cheap, but wonderfull!

french have no special places for breakfast, it's only in hotels and cafés.

The way to eat an inexpensive meal any where is to eat what the locals eat.

In France the custom is to eat a very light breakfast of cafe au lait and a sweet roll or simply a piece of bread with some butter and jam. Juice is sometimes also taken.

Walk into almost any cafe in the early morning, stand at the counter (what they call "le zinc") and ask for "cafe complet."

In France prices are different depending on whether you sit or stand and if you sit, where you sit. Standing at the counter is always the cheapest.

By law all prices have to be displayed so that they can be seen before you enter the establishment. Be sure to check before entering any place. Here you'll be able to see the distinction between prices at the counter (au comptoir), at an inside table (grand salle) or at a table on the terrace.
